Battle Of The Hatchbacks: Yaris And Fit

Will the Honda Hatchback Fit in or will the Yaris outshine? As the Honda Fit subcompact is hitting showroom floors, and more Toyota Yaris' are being sold, the general public will have their own opinions on who the winner of this battle would be. Styling, Engine Power and Comfort will play major part in everyones decision and will sway buyers one way or the other. Let's see what each of these subcompact hatchbacks are packing.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and no one will be able to tell you what style is the clear cut winner. My personal opinion pushes me towards liking the Honda Fit styling better, but I do like both styles. If the Toyota Yaris stayed more to the styles of the previous Echo, I would have echoed in the Yaris as the winner.

Engine power in both cars is relatively close with the Honda Fit's numbers being slightly higher, although really negligible. First the Fit comes in the battle producing 109 horses at 5,800 rpm and 105 lb-ft of torque at 4,800 rpm. The Yaris brings to the battle an engine producing 106 hp at 6,000 rpm and 103 lb-ft of torque at 4,200 rpm. The Yaris' peak torque comes in 600 rpm quicker than the Fit, but really you have to rev the engines up in either car to make the power. The Fit beats the Yaris by 3 hp and 2 lb-ft of torque. Clearly, a very close battle.

Since the design of these cars is to keep good gas mileage a top priority, let's look at those figures. Measuring the fuel economy by Litres / 100 km, the Yaris brings in figures of 6.9 in the city and 5.5 in the highway. The Fit's engine is slightly more thirsty and requires 7.3 in the city and 5.8 on the highway. Not a large difference, but the slight advantage here goes to the Yaris. Both cars require only regular fuel, so neither get an upper advantage with that.

Viewing all the information does not present a clear cut winner. Both produce similar numbers and it is a very tight race. As beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so is the choice. Test drive both if they are in your market for the car you want, and choose which one provides the most comfort for you and most appeal.

Enjoy whichever car you decide to get!
